"VTP II: Honoring the Kingdom of Vainikas"

Four years after VTP's inaugural gathering, the conference returned in November 2018—larger, more ambitious, and ready to honor a legacy that fundamentally shaped South Indian veena culture. The choice to dedicate VTP II to His Highness Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar represented more than historical commemoration; it acknowledged an undeniable truth: Mysore's royal patronage created conditions under which veena culture flourished as nowhere else in modern history.

The Wodeyar Legacy

HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar (1919-1974) embodied the ideal of the philosopher-king. Under his rule, Mysore became "The Kingdom of Vainikas"—a place where royal stipends supported masters, concert opportunities abounded, and the instrument's status remained unquestioned. The centenary of his birth provided a fitting occasion for reflection.

Expansion & Innovation

VTP II represented a quantum leap. The conference expanded to three full days with 16 concerts and 14 research presentations. Ravindra Kalakshetra provided a professional setting, and live streaming via shaale.com democratized access for the global diaspora—a prescient move before the digital shift became essential.

Landmark Research Impact

Dr. B K Durga Prasad's presentation "The Comparative Study of Veena with Human Body through CT and MRI" represented a watershed moment. Using advanced medical imaging to study instrument design marked a dramatic departure from purely musicological inquiry, revealing remarkable correspondences between veena fretboard spacing and human vertebral column proportions.

VTP II established a template: combine world-class performances, rigorous research, historical contextualization, community building, and free accessibility.
